Heirloom Expert: Dividing Daylilies

Daylilies are beautiful, hardy flowers that can be divided. When is the perfect time to divide daylilies?

When should I divide my daylilies?

They can be split just about any time, but avoid doing the job when they are blooming. I like to do it early in the spring as soon as they sprout. That’s not always possible, so I’ll wait until they are done blooming and watch the weather. Even though they are tough, I like to do it on a cool, cloudy day.

I grow lots of daylilies in consort with daffodils. When the daffs are done, the daylilies will cover the foliage of the bulbs as it turns brown.
