Look to the sky for planting dates and unusual meteorological events this fall.

September 2017

September 4. Many people celebrate Labor Day by enjoying a day off from work.

September 6. This full moon is known as the “Harvest Moon” and the “Barley Moon.”

September 21. Today is the International Day of Peace.

September 22. The autumnal equinox marks the arrival of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

Gardening by the moon.Plantabove-ground crops September 5, 23, and 24; harvest September 1, 28, and 29. Plantbelow-ground crops September 14 and 15; harvest September 18 and 19.

October 2017

October 5. This full moon is known as the “Hunter’s Moon” and the “Travel Moon.”

October 21. The Orionids meteor shower, which is the result of dust grains left behind by Halley’s comet, peaks tonight.

October 31. Halloween is a popular celebration that has ties to the Celtic festival of Samhain, a celebration of the end of the harvest season.

Gardening by the moon. Plant above-ground crops October 3, 4, 30, and 31; harvest October 25 and 26. Plantbelow-ground crops October 11 and 12; harvest October 15, 16, and 17.

November 2017

November 4. This full moon is known as the “Beaver Moon” and the “Frost Moon.”

November 5. Set back your clocks and relish an extra hour spent in bed; daylight saving time ends today.

November 11. Veterans Day

November 23. Serve up some of your homegrown heirlooms with today’s Thanksgiving meal.

December 2017

December 3. This full moon is known as the “Cold Moon.”

December 13. The Geminids meteor shower reaches its zenith tonight and should produce a spectacular 120 meteors per hour.

December 21. Winter solstice

December 31. New Year’s Eve
