Look to the sky for planting dates and unusual meteorological events this winter.

December 2017

DECEMBER 3. This full moon is known as the “Cold Moon.”

DECEMBER 13. The Geminids meteor shower reaches its zenith tonight and should produce a spectacular 120 meteors per hour.

DECEMBER 21. Winter solstice

DECEMBER 25. Christmas

DECEMBER 31. New Year’s Eve

GARDENING BY THE MOON. Plant above ground crops December 23, 24, and 25; harvest December 1, 2, 28, and 29. Plant below ground crops December 13, 14, and 15; harvest December 9 and 10.

January 2018

JANUARY 1. New Year’s Day and the full “Wolf Moon.”

JANUARY 3. The Quadrantid meteor shower peaks tonight.

JANUARY 31. Because it’s the second full moon in January, this full “supermoon” is also a “Blue Moon,” although much of the western United States will enjoy watching it turn a shade of red as it becomes obscured in a total lunar eclipse.

GARDENING BY THE MOON. Plant above ground crops January 20, 21, 29, and 30; harvest January 24, 25, and 26. Plant below ground crops January 10 and 11; harvest January 5, 6, and 15.

February 2018

FEBRUARY 2. Groundhog Day traditionally marks the midway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox. Will spring come early or will winter linger?

FEBRUARY 14. Valentine’s Day was originally a Roman festival of fertility called Lupercalia.

FEBRUARY 19. Presidents Day celebrates both George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays.

GARDENING BY THE MOON. Plant above ground crops February 16, 17, 25, and 26; harvest February 21 and 22. Plant below ground crops February 6 and 7; harvest February 2, 3, 11, and 12.

March 2018

MARCH 1. This full moon is known as the “Worm Moon.”

MARCH 11. Clocks “spring forward” today with daylight saving time.

MARCH 20. The vernal equinox marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

MARCH 31. The second full moon in March is also the second “Blue Moon” of 2018.

GARDENING BY THE MOON. Plant above ground crops March 24 and 25; harvest March 20, 21, 28, 29, and 30. Plant below ground crops March 5, 6, 7, 15, and 16; harvest March 2, 10, 11, and 12.
