Look to the sky for planting dates and unusual meteorological events this spring.

March 2018

MARCH 1. This full moon is known as the “Worm Moon.”

MARCH 11. Clocks “spring forward” today with daylight saving time.

MARCH 20. The vernal equinox marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

MARCH 31. The second full moon in March is also the second “Blue Moon” of 2018.

GARDENING BY THE MOON. Plant aboveground crops March 24 and 25; harvest March 20, 21, 28, 29, and 30. Plant belowground crops March 5, 6, 7, 15, and 16; harvest March 2, 10, 11, and 12.

April 2018

APRIL 1. Easter Sunday. Coloring eggs on Easter is a tradition seen around the world. Use purple cabbage to dye eggs blue, red onion skins for lavender, and turmeric for yellow.

APRIL 27. Since the first Arbor Day in 1872, celebrators have planted over 250 million trees. Continue the tradition today.

APRIL 29. April’s full “Pink Moon” heralds the arrival of creeping phlox (Phlox subulata).

GARDENING BY THE MOON. Plant aboveground crops April 20, 21, 22, and 29; harvest April 25 and 26. Plant belowground crops April 2, 3, 12, and 13; harvest April 7 and 8.

May 2018

MAY 15. Ramadan begins at sundown on this day.

MAY 21. Canadians celebrate Victoria Day.

MAY 28. Gather flowers and pay your respects; Memorial Day honors fallen U.S. veterans.

MAY 29. Buddhists celebrate Vesak, which commemorates Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and death, on May’s full “Flower Moon.”

GARDENING BY THE MOON. Plant aboveground crops May 18, 19, 26, 27, and 28; harvest May 22 and 23. Plant belowground crops May 9 and 10; harvest May 4, 5, and 14.

June 2018

JUNE 21. The summer solstice (Litha) marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere and is the longest day and shortest night of the entire year.

JUNE 23. Midsummer Day is a solstice celebration closely observed in northern Europe.

JUNE 27. June’s full moon is known as the “Strawberry Moon,” the “Rose Moon,” and the “Hot Moon.”

GARDENING BY THE MOON. Plant aboveground crops June 14, 15, 23, and 24; harvest June 18 and 19. Plant belowground crops June 5, 6, and 7; harvest June 10 and 11.
